Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science (FNWI), part of Radboud University, engages in groundbreaking research and excellent education. In doing so, we push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and pass that knowledge on to the next generation.

We seek solutions to major societal challenges, such as cybercrime and climate change and work on major scientific challenges, such as those in the quantum world. At the same time, we prepare our students for careers both within and outside the scientific field.

Currently, more than 1,300 colleagues contribute to research and education, some as researchers and lecturers, others as technical and administrative support officers. The faculty has a strong international character with staff from more than 70 countries. Together, we work in an informal, accessible and welcoming environment, with attention and space for personal and professional development for all.

1. Introduction

Would you like to work in a young and dynamic research group and are you interested in developing and applying novel assays and digital tools for plant phenotyping? Then this might be something for you!

2. Job description

In this position, you will contribute to fundamental and applied research to gain in-depth understanding of the processes that influence reproductive development and functioning in vegetable crops under suboptimal environmental conditions. You will be primarily responsible for executing experiments and for processing, analysing and reporting the research results obtained.

In your role, you will have the opportunity to be part of innovative research on the cellular and physiological basis of plant life. You have interest in and affinity with advanced phenotyping techniques and image analysis, including the application of machine learning tools. You also have an eye for peculiarities, work accurately and are critical of your research.

You will work in a lively and stimulating environment with other technicians, internship students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers of the Plant & Animal Biology department of RIBES. The research is conducted in collaboration with leading plant breeding companies, giving you the possibility to broaden your horizon in the private sector as well.

4. We are

The Radboud Institute for Biological and Environmental Sciences (RIBES) aims to perform world-leading research in order to understand the response of the natural environment to human impact. Researchers within RIBES are working on the overarching research mission ’Towards Healthy Ecosystems’, with four focus areas: I. Macronutrients and chemicals of emerging concern, II. Physical conditions: understanding responses and adaptation mechanism to stressors, III. Biodiversity decline and recovery of ecological communities, and IV. Mitigation of greenhouse gasses. Research at RIBES encompasses three major groups of organisms (microorganisms, plants and animals) and spans nearly all levels of biological organisation.

The institute is organised in four departments: Ecology; Plant & Animal Biology; Environmental Science; and Microbiology. The Plant & Animal Biology department is dedicated to advancing the understanding and improvement of plant & animal development, growth and functioning in relation to the environment, by combining quantitative experimental, computational and theoretical approaches.
