Radboud Universiteit

Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science (FNWI), part of Radboud University, engages in groundbreaking research and excellent education. In doing so, we push the boundaries of scientific knowledge and pass that knowledge on to the next generation.

We seek solutions to major societal challenges, such as cybercrime and climate change and work on major scientific challenges, such as those in the quantum world. At the same time, we prepare our students for careers both within and outside the scientific field.

Currently, more than 1,300 colleagues contribute to research and education, some as researchers and lecturers, others as technical and administrative support officers. The faculty has a strong international character with staff from more than 70 countries. Together, we work in an informal, accessible and welcoming environment, with attention and space for personal and professional development for all.

Radboud University
At Radboud University, we aim to make an impact through our work. We achieve this by conducting groundbreaking research, providing high-quality education, offering excellent support, and fostering collaborations within and outside the university. In doing so, we contribute indispensably to a healthy, free world with equal opportunities for all. To accomplish this, we need even more colleagues who, based on their expertise, are willing to search for answers. We advocate for an inclusive community and welcome employees with diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Will you also contribute to making the world a little better? You have a part to play.

1. Introduction

Come and join our pioneering Department of Analytical Chemistry and Chemometrics, where we transform chemical data into valuable insights for industrial sustainability using the newest hybrid AI. Collaborate on exciting projects with industrial partners, develop new methods, and grow as a data scientist in a diverse and dynamic team. You have a part to play!

2. Job description

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work together with several colleagues within the department and with other researchers in environmental sciences and educational sciences to create interpretable and explainable ‘industry 4.0 models’ that provide both economic and environmental predictions and may be adopted by companies.

Your work includes developing new quantitative methods and disseminating these through conference presentations and published papers. It will involve intensive collaboration with colleagues from academia and industry, so teamwork is a must! You will supervise student internships in the line of your own research and you will also be involved in teaching BSc and MSc students. Your research will require infrequent travel to industrial partners within the Netherlands.

3. Profile

  • You have a PhD degree in either Chemometrics or Chemical Engineering or in Data Science/Artificial Intelligence with demonstrable interest in quantitative analysis of physical/chemical data.
  • You have experience or affinity with analysing industrial process data.
  • You have experience with programming in MATLAB/R/Python or similar.
  • You have an affinity for teaching and supervising students.
  • You are a team player, both in an academic setting and in collaborations with industry.

4. We are

The Department of Analytical Chemistry and Chemometrics has been at the forefront of chemical data science for more than 50 years. It currently has 15 PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers researching the next generation of data science methods to translate chemical measurements into valuable insights and predictions. Our researchers have very different backgrounds and therefore, in addition to doing cutting-edge science, learning from each other is a core value in the department. We have a specific interest in the UN Sustainable Development Goals: we develop green information technology to create environmental sustainability in industry.

Scientific collaboration is another core value of the group, not only among the group members, but also with other scientific collaborators in- and outside Radboud University, and with our large network of analytical technology providers, major chemical companies, (academic) hospitals, and governmental institutions with which we turn our academic developments into practical value. Most of our projects take an interdisciplinary and collaborative scope: we provide the fundamental data science to create valuable and comprehensive solutions together with social scientists and scientists from other natural science and engineering domains. A postdoctoral researcher position within our department is therefore a great experience, where your contribution will be valued and valuable and where you may grow as a data scientist and as an interdisciplinary researcher.

5. We offer

  • We will give you a temporary employment contract of 1 year.
  • Your salary within salary scale 10 depends on your previous education and number of years of (relevant) work experience. The amounts in the scale are based on a 38-hour working week.
  • You will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
  • We offer Dual Career Coaching. The Dual Career Coaching assists your partner via support, tools, and resources to improve their chances of independently finding employment in the Netherlands.
  • You will receive extra days off. With full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the statutory 20.
