Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies
Staff and students in the Faculty of Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies reflect on the great challenges of our time, exploring concepts, belief systems and worldviews. In this way they provide philosophical and religious context to the societal debate and contribute to the analysis and solution of major societal challenges. The faculty has over 180 staff, organized in eight academic departments and four support departments. Our academics collaborate in six research centres and teach more than 1,000 students.
Our staff and students are committed. The lines of communication are short and each individual student and staff member is given ample attention. You can find more about our mission and vision on the 'About PTRS' page.
Are you a historian of ancient or medieval philosophy and a passionate researcher and teacher? Join the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science (CHPS) as an Assistant Professor in a dynamic, collaborative research environment.
The Department of History of Philosophy is seeking an Assistant Professor.
You should have a broad background in the history of ancient and medieval philosophy, enabling you to teach courses in ancient and medieval philosophy, including some Arabic philosophy, at the Bachelor's level, and courses in your area of specialisation at the Master's level. You should also be able to teach the relevant academic skills and supervise students writing their Bachelor's or Master's theses. Fulfilling the teaching needs of the department requires sufficient mastery of the Dutch language by the start of the appointment.
We are specifically looking for someone who can complement and reinforce the research carried out at our Center for the History of Philosophy and Science (CHPS). CHPS studies philosophy and science as historically intertwined fields from Antiquity to the current age. Its members have a shared interest in the longue durée evolution of concepts, approaches and methods related to understanding the natural world. Ideally, you have a broad international network and conduct research at the intersection of the history of philosophy and the history of science.
You will play an active role in departmental and faculty activities and you will therefore be expected to take residency in or near Nijmegen.
You will be offered a 0.8 FTE appointment with the possibility of a temporary extension to 1.0 FTE. This position will involve 60% teaching, 35% research and 5% administrative duties.
The Department of the History of Philosophy, which encompasses the Center for the History of Philosophy and Science, brings together historians of philosophy and historians of science in a single teaching and research unit. CHPS's unique focus on the philosophical roots of modern science involves an intense collaboration among its members. They co-edit journals and book series, co-write articles, co-teach courses, and co-supervise dissertations. This mode of collaboration greatly impacts the quality of research and teaching, the success in attracting funds, and our ability to function as an international and inclusive centre.
